Nowadays management degree is also as important as engineering. For management courses, students prefer IIM colleges more than other management colleges in India. IIM means the Indian Institute of Management. IIMs are the Public Business Schools established in 1961 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. IIMs institutions are located in 20 cities of India. The medium of teaching in the colleges is English. The institutions were declared the institutions of National Importance by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) under the Indian Institute of Management act, 2017. The planning commission of India suggested to Jawaharlal Lal Nehru to establish IIM, and he had initiated IIM’S establishment in India.
Courses offered by IIM colleges in India
IIMs mainly offer undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and executive education programmes. Some programmes offered by all IIMs are similar. However, some IIMs offer unique programmes for specialized purposes. IIM colleges in India basically offer two years diploma courses that are called PGDM. PGDM is equivalent to (MBA) Masters of Business Administration.
Procedure for getting admission in IIM colleges
Firstly, for getting admission to IIM College, we have to qualify for the CAT Common Aptitude test Examination. After that, candidates were called for the written test, (GD) Group Discussion and interview. And there, the deserving candidates are selected for admission.
What are the qualifying marks for IIM colleges?
The qualifying marks vary in the category like; for General category, the cutoff is 99-100 percentiles whereas for others reserved category its 97-98 percentiles.
Fees of IIM colleges in India
The fee structure of IIM colleges varies in India as it starts from 12 lakh, and the highest is 23 lakh. The top and old IIM colleges like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta and IIM Bangalore have the highest 23 lakh fee for two years diploma courses, whereas the new and the youngest IIM colleges like IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Ranchi have the lowest fee as of 12 lakh for two-year diploma courses.
National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released every year the ranking of all institutions across the country. In the ranking of NIRF 2020 total of 14 IIM colleges of India hold a place in the top 50 management and engineering colleges. But due to COVID-19, the 2021 ranking is not released yet as it is expected to be released soon. So here, I am giving the list of IIM institutions and their ranking according to NIRF 2020.
List of IIM colleges
1. IIM Ahmadabad:
Indian Institute of Management Ahmadabad ranked 1st in the survey of NIFT 2020. It is also known as (WIMWI) Well Known Institute of Management in Western India. The institute was established on 11th December 1961 in Ahmadabad, Gujarat. It is the 2nd IIM college of India. The Chairman of the institute is Kumar Mangalam Birla, and the Director is Errol D’souza. The motto of the institute is Progress through the Application of Knowledge, and the website is www.iima.ac.in.
2. IIM Bangalore:
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, also known as IIMB, ranked 2nd in the survey. It was established in 1973, and it is the 3rd IIM college of India. Dr Devi Prasadshetty is the Chairperson, and Rishikesha T. Krishnan is the Director of the institute. The motto of the institute is Let our Study be Enlightening, and the website is www.iimb.ac.in.
3. IIM Calcutta:
Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, also known as IIM-C, is ranked 3rd in the survey. It was established on 28th November 1961 in Kolkata, West Bengal, and it is the 1st IIM college of India. Shrikrishna Kulkarni is the Chairperson, and Uttam Kumar Sarkar is the Director of the institute. The institute is accredited by AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS, and CEMS. The motto of the institute is Knowledge for the benefit of all, and the website is www.iimcal.ac.in.
4. IIM Lucknow:
Indian Institute of Management Lucknow, also known as IIM-L, is ranked 4th in the survey. It was established in 1984, and it is the fourth IIM college of India. The Chairman of the institute is Natarajan Chandrasekaran, and the Director is Archana Sukla. The institute has the affiliation of AMBA, AACSB. The motto of the institute is Better Management towards Better Nation, and the website is www.iiml.as.in.
5. IIM Kozhikode:
Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, also known as IIMK, is ranked 6th in the survey. It was established in 1996 in Calicut, Kerala. It is the 5th IIM college of India. A. Vellayan is the Chairman, and Prof. Debanshis Chatterjee is the Director of the institute. It has the affiliation of AMBA. 6. IIM Indore:
Indian Institute of Management Indore, also known as IIM-I, was ranked 7th in the NIRF survey. It was established in 1996 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and It is the 6th IIM college of India. Prof. Himanshu Rai is the Director of the Institution. It has affiliations of AMBA, AACSB, and EQUIS. 7. IIM Trichy
Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli, also known as IIM Trichy, is ranked 15th in the survey. It was established in 2011 in Tiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu. It is the 11th IIM college of India. 8. IIM Udaipur:
Indian Institute of Management Udaipur, also called IIM Udaipur, is ranked 17th in the survey. It was established in 2011 in Udaipur Rajasthan. It is the 13th IIM college of India. 9. IIM Raipur:
Indian Institute of Management Raipur, also known as IIM-RR, ranked 19th in the survey. It was the 10th IIM College established in 2010, by the central government, in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. 10. IIM Ranchi:
Indian Institute of Management Ranchi, also called IIM-RC, is ranked 20th in the survey. It was established in 2009 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. It is the 9th IIM college of India. 12. IIM Shillong:
Indian Institute of Management Shillong, also known as IIM-S, is ranked 30th in the survey of NIRF. It is the 7th IIM of India, established in 2007 in Shillong, Meghalaya. Earlier it was known as RGIIM Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management Shillong. Shishir Bajoria is the Chairperson of the Institute, and Prof D P Goyal is the Director. 13. IIM Kashipur:
Indian Institute of Management Kashipur, also called IIM Kashipur, is ranked 33rd in the survey. It was established in 2011 in Kashipur, Uttarakhand. It is the 12th IIM college of India. 14. IIM Nagpur:
Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, also called IIMN, ranked 40th in the survey of NIRF. 15. IIM Amritsar:
Indian Institute of Management Amritsar was established in 2015 by the MHRD Ministry of Human Resource Development in Amritsar, Punjab. It is one of the youngest as 15th IIM of India. 16. IIM Bodh Gaya:
Indian Institute of Management Bodh Gaya, also known as IIM-BG, is the 16th IIM College in India. It was established in 2015 in Bodh Gaya, Bihar. 17. IIM Sirmaur:
Indian Institute of Management, Sirmaur, was established on 4th September 2015, in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh. It is the 17th IIM college of India. Ajay S. 18. IIM Visakhapatnam:
Indian Institute of Management Visakhapatnam, also known as IIMV, was established in 2015 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. It is also one of the youngest as 18th IIM college of India. 19. IIM Sambalpur:
Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur was established in 2015, Sambalpur, Odisha. It is one of the youngest as the 19th IIM college of India. Arundhati Bhattacharya is the Chairperson, and Mahadeo singh is the Director of the institution. 20. IIM Jammu:
Indian Institute of Management Jammu was established in 2016 in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir. It is the youngest and latest the 20th IIM college of India founded by its present Director Prof. B.S. Sahay.
