Halloween
Halloween means holy evening. Halloween is also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve. It is always celebrated on 31st October.
Halloween is a very popular festival of United States. It is usually celebrated amongst family, friends, co-workers and the society where you live. However, it is celebrated on large scale in some areas. It is a festival of little ghosts and goblins to take to the streets, asking for candy and scaring one another silly. Children dress up in fancy costumes and visit other homes in their neighborhood. They demand sweets, candy, snacks, or small gifts. If they don’t get this, they threaten to do some harm to the dwellers of the house.
History
Halloween is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. At that time people were light bonfires and wear costumes like roaming ghosts. It was the biggest and most significant holiday of the Celtic year. It is also celebrated with same manners and very popular between children and teenagers.
Celebration
Halloween is a very popular festival in all over the world. It is celebrated by a million of people in multiple countries. It is a fun time for kids who put the fancy costumes like ghosts, witches; goblins etc. and ask for their neighbors for candy and gifts. They usually threat their neighbors if they don’t give candies or gifts. It is a time for fun for all.
Symbols
The symbol of Halloween is certainly the Jack-o-lanterns. These lanterns are traditionally carried by guisers on all hallows’ eve in order to frighten evil spirits.
Public Life
Halloween is not an official holiday in United States. Government offices, businesses, schools and colleges are open as usual.
