MTNL: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited
MTNL stands for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited. It is a state-owned telecommunication company in India. Its motto is “Transparency makes us different”. It provides services particularly in two metro cities of India; Mumbai and Delhi including the adjoining cities like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Faridabad, etc.
Apart from Delhi and Mumbai, it also provides telecom services outside India through its subsidiaries and joint ventures. In Nepal, its joint venture, United Telecom Limited (UTL), is providing services and in Mauritius, its subsidiary, Mahanagar Telephone Mauritius Limited (MTML) is providing services.
History
- In 1882, Bombay Telephone was established.
- In 1911, the first telephone system was founded in Delhi.
- On April 1, 1986, the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam was established by the Government of India to improve and expand the telecom network in Delhi and Mumbai.
- It has the monopoly in the market till the telecom industry was opened to private players in 1992.
- It was the Telecom Partner of the Common Wealth Games (CWG)-2010 for creating communication infrastructure to meet the telecom and broadcast needs of the event.

MNTL has also launched various telecom technologies in the country such as ADSL2+ and VDSL2 in broadband, IPTV on MPEG4 technology, VOIP and 3G mobile services.
