What is the full form of PID
PID: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
PID stands for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. It is an infection of the organs of the reproductive system in women. It infects female’s reproductive organs like uterus, ovaries, cervix and fallopian tubes. It is generally caused by a bacteria associated with sexually transmitted infection (STI) like gonorrhea and chlamydia. PID can be caused by other bacteria found in the vagina. It occurs when bacteria spread from the vagina to the reproductive organs and is treated with antibiotics. PID is a very common medical condition as around 1 million women are diagnosed with PID every year.
Risk Factors
People suffering from gonorrhea or Chlamydia have more chances of getting PID. Other factors that can cause this disease are as follow:
- Having sex with different people
- Having sex without using a condom
- Using an intrauterine device (IUD) to prevent pregnancy
- History of pelvic inflammatory disease
Common Symptoms
- Pain in the lower abdomen
- Pain in the upper abdomen
- Pain during sex and urination
- Irregular bleeding
- Increased vaginal discharge
- Fever, vomiting, fainting etc.
To diagnose the PID, your doctor may perform the following tests:
- Pelvic exam to check the pelvic organs.
- Cervical culture to check infection of the cervix.
- Urine test to check the signs of blood, cancer etc.
Complications
If not treated, it may cause scar tissue and fluid to collect in the fallopian tubes that may damage the reproductive organs and thus can cause infertility, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain etc.
