PMS: Premenstrual Syndrome
PMS stands for Premenstrual Syndrome. It refers to the physical and emotional symptoms in females prior to the monthly period. These symptoms usually occur between the ovulation and the start of menstrual bleeding, i.e. two weeks before the menstruation starts.
Common Symptoms
- Tiredness and decreased sexual desire
- Tender breasts and nipple discharge when nipples are pressed
- Headaches, aching muscles and joints
- Mood swings, stress, depression and irritability
Cause
The cause of PMS is not clear, but it is believed that it is associated with the fluctuating levels of hormones like estrogen and progesterone before the onset of menstruation.
