Veterans Day
Veterans Day is one of the popular holiday of United States. It is always celebrated on the 11th November.
Veteran day is dedicated to honor and thanks all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly the living veterans. It is an official federal holiday in United States. It is celebrated every year on 11, November. On the occasion of Veterans Day, the American flag is hung at half mast in most of the states. A two minute silence is held at 11 AM and parades are organized. Some schools and colleges are closed on Veterans Day.
History
After the end of World War-I, the president of United States Wilson proclaimed 11, November, as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. He said the following words. “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations”.
It was originally celebrated as “a day observed with parades, public meetings, and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11 AM”.
Celebration
Veterans Day is celebrated in USA with great enthusiasm. It includes some special events for the veterans of the US’s major wars and conflicts. Some of them are:
- World War-I
- World War-II
- The Vietnam War
- The Korean War
- Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan etc.
It was first celebrated by the president of United States Woodrow Wilson in 1919.
Public Life
It is not a federal holiday in United States. So, there is no legal requirement that schools close on Veteran Day. Some states or school district make their own policies on school closing.
